JAPAN EXTENSIVE READING PROJECT
To improve student ability and interest in English by providing comprehensible reading input. This project will initially be limited to JHS resources, but these should prove useful for all but the most high-level SHS students as well.
Method:
Create a bank of graded reading resources that JTEs and ALTs can access and print out for use with their classes.
Plan:
* Determine appropriate levels for materials, roughly based on the junior high school textbooks “New Horizon”
* Set up a website detailing the vocabulary and grammar to be used at each level
* Invite contributions from teachers around Japan, and host downloadable materials
Levels:
Level 1a
(first half of NH1) white
Level 1b
(all of NH1) yellow
Level 1c
(all of NH1: further practice with extra vocab) red
Level 2a
(first half of NH2) light blue
Level 2b
(all of NH2) dark blue
Level 2c
(all of NH2 and NH1: further practice with extra vocab) purple
Level 3a
(first half of NH3) light brown
Level 3b
(all of NH3) dark brown
Level 3c
(all of NH3, NH2, and NH1: further practice with extra vocab) black
Levels should be colour coded or named so that students do not make the connection between textbook and reader (most students will not be reading at their current textbook level).
